Welcome to UNAIDS Science now and to the second issue of HIV this month in 2015!

On 23-26 February, we heard new and exciting research results reported at the Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections (CROI) in Seattle. Notable among these was the release of results from PROUD, Ipergay and Partners PrEP Demonstration Project. If you recall PROUD and Ipergay were stopped in 2014 by their data and safety monitoring boards because they found it unethical to continue on and not offer tenofovir/emtricitabine as PrEP, which has shown very significant HIV risk reduction results, to men in the deferred/placebo group. UNAIDS issued a press statement welcoming further evidence of the efficacy of antiretroviral medicines in preventing new HIV infections on the UNAIDS website on 24 February. You might also want to check the electronic materials and webcasts from the CROI website.

You might want to look at Stefano Vella’s comment in the Lancet HIV on End of AIDS on the horizon, but innovation needed to end HIV. He points out that the end of AIDS is not the end of HIV and although proven strategies exist to prevent AIDS, to end HIV innovation is necessary.

And in case you didn’t know, we celebrate Zero Discrimination Day on 1 March around the world.

Enjoy this issue!
