Welcome to UNAIDS Science now and to the sixth issue of HIV this month in 2015!

Following the HIV 2015: Using Phylogenetics to Enhance the HIV Response symposium on 4 June at the NYAS, an article on HIV family trees reveal viral spread by Jon Cohen was published in Science. It summarizes the symposium and talks about the latest studies in phylogenetics as well as ethical dilemmas raised by such research.

On 25 June, the UNAIDS and Lancet Commission launched Defeating AIDS: advancing global health a report that called on the world to drastically accelerate AIDS efforts or face more HIV infections and deaths than five years ago.

A Study to Prevent Infection with a Ring for Extended Use (ASPIRE), a phase III trial of the dapivirine vaginal ring for HIV prevention in women has recently been completed. Researchers are expected to release results early in 2016. This is an important study as there is an urgent need to add to the array of available HIV prevention options, especially those that are controlled by women.
