Welcome to UNAIDS Science now and to the twelfth issue of HIV this month in 2015!

A Perspective on Ending the HIV–AIDS Pandemic — Follow the Science by Anthony Fauci and Hillary Marston in the New England Journal of Medicine talks about how far antiretroviral therapy has come since its discovery and its role in ending the AIDS epidemic. The authors conclude that in order to match the scientific evidence, the political will must be mobilized and the required financial and human resources provided to scale up global HIV testing and treatment.

On the other hand, an article HIV: Cure by killing by Douglas D. Richman in Nature briefly describes work by Sung et al. and Pegu et al. on different protein constructs which are designed to increase the efficiency of the anti-HIV immune response and to help clear rare, latently infected cells. He notes that research into a cure for HIV needs to welcome and investigate all innovative options, as it forms the early stages of a long and difficult path.

As 2015 has just ended, we take this opportunity to thank you, dear readers for your loyalty and support to keep this digest going.

Enjoy this issue and all the best for 2016!
